Poor Charles Bovary, one of the great oblivious husbands of literature in Flauber’s Madame Bovary is another classic, plodding along while Emma pursues passion and fantasy with spectacular consequences. Then there’s Sleuth, that wicked little showdown between husband and lover, where humiliation, rivalry, and male vanity are the whole point. The more recent version (2007) features Michael Caine as the older husband and Jude Law as the lover, but the older version (1972) with Laurence Olivier as the cuckold husband and Michael Cane as the younger lover is my favorite. Dr. Bill (Tom Cruise) in Eyes Wide Shut, is one of cinema’s great portraits of male cuckold panic, sexual jealousy, wounded male vanity, a man unraveling because he cannot stand what he imagines. Even the great tragedies like Shakespeare’s Othello runs on cuckold terror, male pride, and sexual paranoia. The common thread? Cuckolding in great stories is rarely just about sex. It’s about vanity, rivalry, fantasy, humiliation, longing, and the delicious shock of not being the one in charge.
